And nice interview, but I believe your grandpa is talking about personal dreams, because the definition of the American Dream is a promise of freedom also includes a promise of the possibility of prosperity and success.
It also includes meritocracy, which means that if you put the work into it, you can achieve almost anything you want. Though we all know that is not true, as the rich makes all the real decisions. So yeah, it is a myth, but in a different way.
