Don't control locks have big flouresent flags on them? If not they appear to need them. Also, this has to be the first thing on the preflight checklist. Bottom line is they didn't do there checklist!

@GregDrayGregDray A control lock is a device used on the ground only, in an aircraft to stop any of the control surfaces from moving.
In smaller aircraft such as a Cessna 172 it is a pin that is placed through the control column to stop the ailerons and elevators from moving.
This is done to prevent them from bashing around in the wind and causing damage to the airframe or control linkages.
Damn what a shitty way to die.
