security True! I met this street smart lady she said she can use my card without ID. To prove it she took my card and used it at 4 different stores. I couldn't believe it! I always use a bank clerk who knows me! They want you to use the internet they say it's safer BS! It's just easier for them. Millions of hackers are trying to get my info online. There are only a couple of hundred dumpster divers in my town plus I tear info and use 3 different bags. But then I don't have a lot of money. LOL
jssiler, search the term "ATM skimmers". You will learn that debit cards are easily compromise in many ways. Not at all impossible. While a pin and two factor authentication are more secure, it can still be defeated. wiki is a guide, not an expert resource. Do more homework and you will understand the risks.
We may agree to disaggree here, but an "ATM Skimmer" is a device (usually external) that an unsuspecting person uses because they don't know better. I define skimming and breach differently. There have been thousands of credit card incidents and only one PIN debit case that I'm personally aware of in '06. I would challenge you to find one PIN debit incident minus the March'06 case which happened to be inconclusive. Since then with new security I'm aware of zero PIN number breaches.
New Data Breach At Stop & Shop Credit Union Journal, The, February, 2007 Shoppers throughout the Massachusetts-Rhode Island border are being warned that high-tech thieves may have compromised their bank or credit union accounts by breaking into the check-out line card readers at area Stop & Shop supermarkets and planting card skimmers.
The company said that consumer account information, including personal identification codes and PINs for cards, was stolen from two stores, in Coventry and Cranston, R.I., and four other stores in Bristol, Providence and Warwick, R.I., ...
The Stop & Shop incident was device tampering. I don't like any of it but device tampering may effect hundreds of people and in some rare cases a thousand or so. A system breach like TJX is tens of millions of cardholders. A system compromise is a much more material event than a skimming scam. Still, I'm not aware of a non skimming related PIN-debit compromise with the exception of the aforementioned March'06 event.
OK, The point is, PIN isnt totally secure. 2 factor is more secure. We agree on this. Even still, it can be compromised. The tjx breach also included data pins along with debit/credit cards and a few hundred socials. In the end, we need more layers of protection. Even a simple Phish and unsuspecting consumers will give up a pin. That can be loaded to a giftcard and cash withdrawn or used at a terminal.
