The AH-64A Apache and the AH-64D Apache Longbow

The AH-64 Apache is the most feared tank killer on the battlefield today. It first proved itself in combat in the Gulf war in 1990-1991. This video is an informative video on the AH-64A and AH-64D Apache Longbow. The AH-64D is an upgraded version of the AH-64A.

In addition to the information in the video, the AH-64 also has wire cutters placed at critical places on the chopper. The wire cutters are located at the forward nose turret, below the rotor hub, in front of the gun. and on both main landing gear legs. These have proved highly effective when operating over urban areas as for the wires to not take the apache down. The Apache also has an audio warning system that works in addition to visual cues that feed throught the crew's headsets. The crew even receive a tonal signal to indicate that they are transmitting in a secure radio mode. The apache's external pylons are articulated to provide the desired elevation for various elevation fire modes and for aerodynamic/handling purposes. When it lands, the pylons automatically translate to ground stow mode, so that they are parallel with level terrain.

There is no such thing as a system operator in the apache. Both crew members are required to be fully qualified apache pilots and are usually qualified in both seats. Although the front seat is the primary gunner. Both seats have full flight controls and can fire all weapon systems.
