We have an extraordinary relationship with dogs - closer than with any other animal on the planet. But what makes the bond between us so special?

Research into dogs is gaining momentum, and scientists are investigating them like never before. From the latest fossil evidence, to the sequencing of the canine genome, to cognitive experiments, dogs are fast turning into the new chimps as a window into understanding ourselves.

Where does this relationship come from? In Siberia, a unique breeding experiment reveals the astonishing secret of how dogs evolved from wolves. Swedish scientists demonstrate how the human/dog bond is controlled by a powerful hormone also responsible for bonding mothers to their babies.

Why are dogs so good at reading our emotions? Horizon meets Betsy, reputedly the world's most intelligent dog, and compares her incredible abilities to those of children. Man's best friend has recently gone one step further - helping us identify genes responsible for causing human diseases.

  • bbc make the documentaries I feel I can trust, makes me glad to poay for my tv licence

  • I don't think they can confirm that humans are right-biased until they do it on humans from different cultures. I think the point that we read from left to right would naturally allow us to favor a left to right view on faces. They should either test babies or people who came from right to left reading cultures.

  • @suddenlyitsobvious I'm a human and I cannot read brainwaves as far as I know...

  • Love dogs! Have also had close accord with cats. They made their wishes known to me just as plainly. Many also watched my face. One watched debates on TV (VERY into people). Another would get the toy you named when she wanted you to play with her. Have also had horses that seemed able to read my mind. All wonderful experiences.

  • @suddenlyitsobvious Don't be so stupid.

  • @suddenlyitsobvious Says the man who is able to live twice as long due to scientific discoveries in medicine.

  • Pfft. Dogs don't need to read emotions from the face, as the scientist at 5:00 is suggesting. Science is way too psychotic, positivist/materialistic, destructive, autistic & blind with no respect for life whatsoever to be able to 'measure' these things.

Dogs have more subtle means of picking up moods than studying facial expressions, they feel atmospheres and brainwaves as any reasonably sensitive human would as well.

Of course, scientists aren't sensitive at all, they're into CONTROL.

  • 2000 years ago in the old testament it talks about ancient hebrew girls walking dogs with a leash. so this is ancient!! this is not MODERN or cool. or something of modern society. this has been going on for thousands of years. the relationship of dogs and humans.
