The horse is having to be what is often referred to (at least where I am) as "blocked by the rider's hand" as a way to hold him back. He would have galloped at racing speed if they let him!

You can tell Joey is being held back because his neck is craning(doing a u position). As a jockey in training you learn pretty quickly that a thoroughbred like Joey would stretch the neck out to be more airodimanic(sp)

i loved this scene. I like how Michael described in the book that Joey was excellent at jumping but in the film he's not

I love the fact that the horse is clearly having to be held back loads and given the chance would show them how to fly! and fly right out of shot most likely!!

well in the book joey is a TB x something so I geuss in the movie he should show everybody how to fly =)
