VICTORIA -- It's simple, have her fill out the list come down to Trish Tacomas shop, and they find the gifts and wrap them for him.
It's just another way to keep her small business's customers from heading south.
"I think people are looking for more quality, and thinking a bit more about what there buying and buying with a bit more of conscience."
But it can be tough to battle big business. Black Friday generates huge sales and revenue, sometimes as much as twenty-five percent of annual profits. And the line ups in the U.S. have already begun.
"Black friday has morphed into more of a black November and by that I mean the event doesn't just occur anymore on the Friday after thanksgiving, it has started to occur also on Thursday."
Now there is cyber Monday, where online stores offer up big discounts from the comfort of your own home.
But with the dollar at par Canadian retailers say you can get the same good deals in their shops.
"With Black Friday being a tradition in the states they will execute strategies to entice shoppers and typically the strategies will get applied to the Canadian market place as well."
Toys R Us is one of those U.S. based companies who will hold their 2nd annual half off event starting tomorrow, giving Canadians their own black Friday -- and that has kids here hoping more items like this will be under there tree this season.
"I asked Santa and he said I have to eat lots of vegetables and then I get a car, a racecar, a blue race car."
And while shoppers we spoke to wont be handing over more cash this year, they say they will be spending about the same or less.
"Probably about the same, but every year I have less people to buy for so it gets a little easier."
"Ah do I have a budget? Next to nothing, I'm probably going to be making arts and crafts for this year. Yeah popsicle stick houses, stuff like that."
So no matter how much money you have to spend this year, retailers are hoping you'll forgo a ferry trip and buy local.
