Well buses have o go on streets correct?Sure they might have there own lanes but they are using streets that were disigned 100s of years ago, versues light rail when its started from scratch.O&M is very expensive for buses over a while.
It all depends on the system you design, there is no inherent reason that by putting tyres on a carrage your are locked into treating the veichle like a car or a lorry. Traffic priority signals and full bus priority can be used. There are a range of measure depending on your commitment to fast bus travel. In curichiba buses pay for themselves, i know that many UK mass transit systems cant do that.
Dont forget that buses have to stop for traffic when they cross roads lrt doesnt they just go down.If they ran three buses at a time that would be a HUGE waste+brt cost ten times as much to maintain.
LRT generally has better capacity than BRT, but I would think if you run multiple buses in groups then I would think it could have the same capacity as light rail with full signal priority. However, the operating costs would probably exceed that of light rail.
Also, I am skeptical of how fast LRT is. While rail seems more "attractive" than buses to many, most YouTube videos show LRT running fairly slowly through urban areas and only reach good speeds through low density and rural stretches.
