Small Heath Community Forum (the Forum) was established in 1996 as a company limited by guarantee. Its purpose is to strengthen the local community (predominantly BME) through developing a strong network with membership drawn from the local voluntary, community and private sector. The Forum is engaged in a wide range of partnerships and, through its diverse membership, has become an effective mechanism for BME community engagement.
The Forum aims to create a strong network among the voluntary, community and private sectors, to help mainly BME community groups, become actively involved in local regeneration The Forum aims to:
promote and benefit all of the communities in Small Heath and its surrounding district
• represent all of the communities within the Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) area of Small Heath, particularly those suffering disadvantage
• represent its members to public and private sector institutions
• develop initiatives to combat disadvantage
• disseminate information to the local communities and organisations
• research and monitor employment and unemployment trends
Rationale for Small Heath Community Forum
While there are many very successful individual projects in the area, there is no collective community view on regeneration. There is no structured method through which community groups can carry out the SRB work programme, ie advocating, lobbying for and implementing projects. There are no links between voluntary and public sector agencies, and no mechanism for communicating community views in a coherent way.
