Steve prefontaine was an american long distance legend who set numerous american records and was going for the olympic gold when he died in a fatal car accident in the mid 70's. He helped set the running boom which caused Nike to become one of the wealthiest companies to this day. Pre wore the very first nike's which were made on a waffle iron by bill bowermen.

  • Every time I see this commercial I am a bit frustrated at how Steve is portrayed. Yes he did wonders for this sport by fighting the AAU and I can guarantee that nobody respects and loves this man more than I do, but he was more than "a rebel who happened to run". He was a man of infinite talent and he loved his running. It was his love for the sport that made him speak out, not the other way around. Of all people, Nike should understand that.

  • @FortiusCitiusAltius true Nike used him to make money of course but the people who knew steve respected him beyond being just a "rebel who just so happened to run"

  • It's crazy to get on here and see all the bickering of Viren and Pre!! Viren ran a better strategic race than Pre. The notion of the "killer" pace is what doomed Pre is completely incorrect. The 1st 2 miles were very slow and kept everyone in the race. If Pre would have ran his normal race and pushed the pace at the start it may have weakened Viren some but take nothing from Viren he answered every move from Pre. It is a shame no matter what that Pre died and who knows what he could have done.

  • if Pre would've ran home instead of driving he would still be alive

  • Pre is an awsome runner, im a runner and i really look up to him!!!:D

  • @PreKickedVirensAss You're delusional. The only other person who tripped was Mohammad Gammoudi.

  • *don't

  • I think Prefontaine and Viren were both amazing runners. Each ran their own way and left nothing on the track or course. You can uplift whoever you like, but down put down the other.

  • Respect? YOU want to talk about RESPECT?!?!? Yo accuse someome of doping with no fucking PROOF?!?!? You can SHOVE your RESPECT.

  • @VirenKickedPresAss Dude, my main part of that message was that Pre and Viren were both great runners, and you can't win them all. Give respect where respect is due. They both worked their asses off. The only reason I mention Viren in a negative light sometimes is because you glorify him and annoy me (along with tons of other people just wanting to watch a youtube clip) so much that now when I think of Viren I think of someone always trying to defend him and put down others. Great image...

  • @PreKickedVirensAss Proof that he did NOT blood dope? Where does the burden of proof lie, DUMBASS???

  • @VirenKickedPresAss Unfortunately, even with if proof did come up that Viren did NOT blood dope, his reputation will still, and has been, tarnished because of that. I honestly don't know why you are so upset over how popular Pre is. Read the title. He is an AMERICAN legend. Maybe in Europe Viren was the hero, but Pre will always be a legend, especially here. You need to admit to yourself that both Prefontaine and Viren were both great runners, and that you can't win them all.
