  • Interesting topic because as a now 20 year old young adult I grew up interpreting all the time for my dad. Well, the responsibility was split between myself and my Mom (educational interpreter at the time). During the teenage years I really hated this job especially with my dad's sometimes blunt/tactless attitude that I was to interpret. However, now I am very glad because I am working already as a professional interpreter and without him pushing me in this direction I couldn't be where I am.

  • Growing up, I did interpret a lot for my parents. I do not believe they did this out of convenience. I do understand that just because there were not many options available like there are today, it still does not justify placing a child in an inappropriate situation. Many times I would find myself delegated, not by my parents, but by teachers, relatives, etc. I sincerely believe that my parents had our best interest at heart.

  • I think is convenient to the parents, but totally inapropiate for the kids to interpreter for their parents. It really doesnt help if the child has limited vocabulary due his/her young age and sometimes the topics are just for adults like in the doctor's office etc. Good for the CODA kids who are immerse into Deaf Culture but inappropiate for parents to use their little ones as interpreters. My two cents....

  • Interesting topic. I had interpreted for my mom on many occasions. I will have to be honest because sometimes it can be fustrating but then later on I changed my perspectives. My mom is fluent in ASL but her english is not so good. I think it just depends on the little things like this. At certain times it will be helpful. You should conduct a survey =)
