Jean Ritchie sings the Christmas folk song, "The Cherry Tree Carol" (a.k.a. "The Kentucky Cherry Three Carol" or Child Ballad #54). The Irish folk group, The Clancy Brothers, recorded this song under the title "When Joseph Was an Old Man."
"The Cherry-Tree Carol" was originally a British folk song dating from at least the early 15th century. It was collected in the early 20th century in the Appalachian Mountains of America by Francis James Child.

Love this song - love playing it on my guitar and singing it - though my singing doesn't come close to Jean Ritchie's beautiful sound! :)

This is Jean at her best: Unaccompanied. I've been listening to her for over 45 years and this still is the tops. Now I am sad.

Thanks for uploading! I've been hearing lots of individual Child Ballads, does anyone know where I can find them all?
