Ooievaars klepperend op nest - White Stork - Ciconia ciconia

De witte ooievaar komt algemeen voor in Nederland en de Zwarte ooievaar wordt af en toe in ons land gesignaleerd. Een ooievaar eet vooral kikkers en grote insecten, maar ook jonge vogels, hagedissen en knaagdieren staan op het menu.
Voor een broedplek maakt de ooievaar graag gebruik van kunstmatige nestgelegenheden op daken en wagenwielen, maar hij broedt ook steeds meer in zelfgemaakte nesten in bomen.
Een ooievaar bouwt z'n nest graag bij een rijk voedselgebied, want bij een gemiddeld aantal jongen moet het ouderpaar minstens 4 kilo aan voedsel voor hun kroost verzamelen.

The White Stork (ciconia ciconia) is a large wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae. This bird breeds in open farmland areas with access to marshy wetlands. It builds a stick nest in trees, on buildings, or special platforms. Because it is viewed as bird of good luck, it is not persecuted, and it often nests close to human habitation. A White Stork pair raises a single brood a year. This stork is almost silent except for the noisy mutual bill-clattering when adults meet at the nest.
