It's frightening to read that you just wrote about this being a gentle rape. Rape is rape.

The sad part about rape is the victim has to live with the memories and those feelings of being rapped for the rest of their life. They could go through depression, suicidal thoughts and yet the man has nothing to regret. As we live through society everyday no matter what people think or say women will always be the more vulnerable sex. Which is why good men must protect and defend women when the time comes and respect women as they are humans not objects or personal possessions.

I think the idea and concept that women scream when they get raped is sadly misunderstood and to fight back and to scream is something which rarely happens. As someone who has been raped, I froze when is happened and stayed as still as I could, I didn't call out. It's instinct; it's survival to keep quiet. Women's intuitions when something traumitising and frightening such as rape happens is to play dead, flight, then fight. The violence is the rape- sexual violence.

I think the creators of the show were sensitive about not making it purely physical. It's more that he rapes her mentally, in not respecting her will, and shaming her (which serves its purpose, as their relationship falls apart). If the rape had been more violent, she would have needed therapy, the damage would have been more severe, and they wanted her to be able to look at it coldly afterwards, and not be traumatized. That's why I think they formated the rape the way they did.

Sexual violence? What violence? That was the gentlest rape scene I've ever seen. It was more like Joan was startled by her fiance's aggression and intimidated by the thought of losing face in the workplace. Why else wouldn't she scream? It's interesting how "painful" many commentators found this. It almost begs the question of what's worse: Physical Damage or Psychological Damage?

This is still considered acceptable behavior by so many people even today. They think just because a woman is engaged or married to a man, it's a DUTY to say "yes" every time and that it's not considered rape because the person doing it them is supposed to be doing it to them. It's absolutely disgusting. I'm so glad she dumped his ass.

It took until season 5 when Joan said the words "You never were a good man, even before we were married. And you know what I am talking about" for the truth of this scene to finally be addressed.
