"I was asked to compose a soundtrack for the documentary Venice West and the LA Scene, which is about rebels from the 50s in the LA and the era of California Beat Era artists and poets. The producers wanted to use the music of Charles Mingus, but the cost of the rights proved to be an obstacle. Having worked with the editor before on another project, they came to me. I absorbed everything I could from an extensive Mingus collection and began to write. The results are nothing even close to the genius of Charles Mingus, but I'm very proud of what the boys and I delivered. Blue Venice was inspired my Mingus' "Cryin' Blues". I know they are very different and that's fine with me."
