My pitiful attempt at an old folk song (I think it's actually Scottish in origin though I may be wrong) set during one of the four Anglo Dutch wars of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Based on the excellent version by the duo Salmon's Leap.

The Lowlands of Holland

On the night that she was married, and upon her wedding bed,
There up came a bold sea captain and he stood at her bed head.
Saying "Arise, Arise young wedded man and come along with me,
To the lowlands of Holland to fight the enemy".

She held her lover in her arms thinking that he might stay,
But the captain he gave another shout, he was forced to go away.
"There are many a fine young wedded man tonight with me must go
To the lowlands of Holland to fight the enemy".

They took her love to a gallant ship, a ship of greatly fame,
with four and twenty seamen bold to steal across the Maine.
A storm then began to rise and the seas began to shout,
twas then her love and his gallent ship were sorely tossed about.

Said the Mother to her Daughter "Why do you so lament?
Aren't there men enough in Ireland to fill your discontent?"
"There are Men enough in Ireland but alas there are none for me,
Since the lowlands of Holland stole way my love from me".

"I'll wear no shoes nor stockings nor combs upon my head,
no firelight, no candle bright to show my beauty fair".
"And never will I marry til the day I die,
Since the lowlands of Holland came between my love and I,
Since the lowlands of Holland came between my love and I

  • @mommarox2 I'm actually the next county along from Kent if you take Sussex to be one county. Thank you very much Dianne!!!

  • beautiful song Pete. have not heard this one but it really goes deep.

I agree with Donae, I love listening to people with accents.

my brother in law is from Kent and doctored in Austalia for a few years before coming to Canada, you can imagine his accent. he talks so fast, most people hear the first 2 words and the last word of his sentence. lol

loved the song and going in my favs

  • @LittleFawn60 I don't think there are many over here that would say I have beautiful sounding accent lol. With accents it's how we perceive certain types of songs should sound, I think we would expect country music for example to be sung with a southern USA accent. Anyway I'm talking gibberish now lol, thank you very much Donnae.
