Interior of BUS 142 from the book "Into the Wild," where Chris McCandless died. We were there August 9, 2006. This is around the same time of year when McCandless passed away. I was pleased to see that the Bible his parents left behind WAS still there, as well as the brass plaque they dedicated to his memory. We searched the walls of the bus for any sign of McCandless's graffiti but couldn't find any. That's what we are talking about when I say "Think it's all gone?" In its' place are HUNDREDS of other comments written or scratched into the walls from everyone that's made the pilgrimage out there. Most of it is peoples' initials or names and the date they were there ( T-Bomb 24/May/05 ). Others have written lenghty passeges from Tolstoy and Thoreau or whomever. The one that stuck out and stayed with me was lifted from Shawshank Redemption, "Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'." BREVITY! Unfortunately, our group (including Matt, aka: Mattynipplepensacola, who has posted the other two videos that I shot) DIDN"T have much time to look extensively for any of McCandless's handwriting. In the final seconds of this video I held on some random graffiti, but it's much too dark to show up in this clip.

  • The Plaque says:

Christopher Johnson McCadnless "Alex" 2/68 8/92

Chris, our beloved son and brother, died here during his adventurous travels in search of how he could best realize God's great gift of life. His final message, "I have had a happy life and thank the Lord. Goodbye and may God bless all," We commend his soul to the world.

  • It would be wrong to disrespect Chris we should admire his spirit and love for nature. We should also remind young people that Chris errored by going into the wilderness unprepared to live in such a harsh enviroment. He had zero training and was thinking more about the "dream" of Alaska than the reality.Chris made a horrible mistake and it would be wrong to romanticize his decision to go to Alaska ignorant of the terrain.Young people need to learn from this mistake. We dont want tragedy again.

  • he went f or peace and maybe he had some bad luck but he is an inspiration for many people who want a better and simple life

    R.I.P.

  • @BluntSmokeBluntSmoke you saying "Jesus isn't real" is like me saying a word that I don't even know the definition of. Think before you speak my sir and God bless.

  • @Oehtkralc the moose in the movie was road kill they picked up they didnt shoot an actual moose

  • Why dont u people believe in Jesus?? He is the Lord, and thanks to him, u have a family, food and anything u need.

  • this guy was the furthest thing from an inspiration

  • @hulkout666 - Lol yea. I don't give a fuck about jesus as well. I just use him as a name to sing along with the rest of the phrase "hates society" - the reason - because there's a shitload of people who think jesus was a great guy. When you say that a 'great guy' hates society, the people who follow him, follow suit. lolz. But nah man. - and btw hulk - look around. Nothings better than history. People lived happily then, and they live happily now. You've got a mind for comparison. lol

  • @dougymoo So you hate modern society. Why are you using a computer? Let's see how long you last without electricity, running water, decent medical care, and everything else we have in our modern society. It's true we have a very imperfect world, but tell me a time in history that you think was better. And by the way, who gives a fuck about Jesus? As the AC/DC song goes "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be".
