NL // 'Nine Finger', de samenwerking tussen perfomer Benjamin Verdonck, Rosas-danseres Fumiyo Ikeda en choreograaf Alain Platel, is zonder twijfel één van de meest troublerende theatergebeurtenissen uit 2007. De makers baseerden zich op het aangrijpende boek 'Beasts of No Nation' van Uzodinma Iweala, een Amerikaan van Nigeriaanse origine. Door de ogen van een kindsoldaat in Afrika kijkt de auteur naar de perversiteit van de oorlog. Verdonck en Ikeda vertellen samen dit verhaal, kinderlijk-poëtisch maar tegelijk niets ontziend.

FR // 'Nine Finger', la collaboration entre Benjamin Verdonck, performer, Fumiyo Ikeda, la danseuse de Rosas, et Alain Platel, chorégraphe, est sans aucun doute un des évènements théâtraux marquants de 2007. Les créateurs se sont basés sur le poignant 'Beasts of No Nation', écrit par Uzodinma Iweala, Américain dorigine nigériane. Lauteur contemple la perversité de la guerre à travers les yeux dun enfant soldat. Verdonck et Ikeda racontent ensemble cette histoire, dont le style poétique enfantin ne nous épargne pourtant aucun détail.

EN // 'Nine Finger', the joint production by the performer Benjamin Verdonck, the Rosas dancer Fumiyo Ikeda and the choreographer Alain Platel, was without doubt one of the most unsettling theatre events of 2007. The makers based the work on the moving book 'Beasts of No Nation' by Uzodinma Iweala, an American who originates from Nigeria. The writer looks at the perversity of war through the eyes of a child soldier in Africa. Verdonck and Ikeda tell us this story in a way that is childishly poetic and yet highly perceptive.
