We just got our first shipment of the new Pro-GTV version of the Swart AST, and we've noticed the question on many forums - "how do the two amps compare?" - so, we thought we'd show you!

Both amps are fresh out of the box and in stock form. Guitar-wise, we used a Reverend Buckshot for it's sweet middle-position tones and punchy bridge-pickup. Switching between the two amps is done via the EHX Switchblade. Cables are Freedom Expression brand, which we make ourselves - we used two 10' cables from amp to switcher, and one 5' cable from switcher to guitar.

We decided to use a single mic - an M-Audio Sputnik in cardioid pattern, placed 18" back and equidistant from the two amps ... we could have used two separate close mics to capture each amp optimally in its own right, but we decided that a single mic would be the most effective way to demonstrate the differences between the two amps, which is the purpose of this video!

Watch out for individual clips of the AST and the AST Pro-GTV coming soon!

  • Thanx for posting, could you tell me what the speakers are? great demo

  • @OleEnggrav Cheers! AST - Mojotone BV-25M ; AST Pro - Celestion Heritage Series G12H (55Hz).

  • Looks like bias modulating. Does it put more wear on the power tubes?

  • @pleximanic1 Correct, bias trem. It's not excessively hard on the tubes, you'll still get plenty of life out of them, plus the sonic results are well worth it.

  • soundslike a speaker change, or you could achive the same tone ny doing this! Very simalar.

  • @justthebassplayer Yes, same amp, the Pro version has a different speaker and a deeper cabinet.

  • How loud do these bad boys get before cranking up? Can i get good cleans and keep up with the drummer?

  • I tried the two side by side and went with the pro. It's just a smarter design with the recessed knobs larger feet and deeper cab. Sound wise I believe as well that we are hearing the speaker more then the cab. Being able to fit most any 12" in the pro is a big plus. What would be cool is a 10" in between the ast and jr. Clocking in around 12 watts.

  • I slightly favor the AST.

  • If I were to get the pro I'd get it with an alnico gold speaker
