Flatrock River, Indiana. Near the intersection of Shelby, Decatur, and Rush counties. The river reached 2800 cfs on Friday. By Saturday morning it was dropping fast, but it was still flowing 900 when we put-in at around 4pm. The late put-in was due to the need to hit some garage sales in the morning, then pack and drive, find a put-in, and run a bike shuttle. We ended up driving into St. Paul, Indiana, when we noticed that we reached St. Omer on 421, and had driven over the river. We followed any road leading downhill, until we found the river, then turned into the Hidden Paradise campground, so that the family would have fun and be safe while I rode the shuttle. This lower put-in most likely caused us to miss the best play spots, but we were not there for surfing. This was the inaugural river run for us in a canoe. We ran the Rio Grande last summer with lots of water, but that was in a 2-man raft. The kind proprietors at the campground warned us to stay away from the swollen torrent. They insisted that we wear life jackets, so their hearts were in the right place. They also could not believe that I would ride the 4 mile shuttle, but I advised them that I could handle the hill. The run was mild and pleasant. We were happy to have as much water as we did. There were plenty of birds, and it appears that raccoons, otters, or waterfowl eat lots of large freshwater mussels at the beach where we played. We look forward to returning to this part of Indiana for more runs. There are a number of good headwaters of the East Fork of the White River, which is a tributary of the Wabash, then Ohio, and then Mississippi rivers. Even though the terrain is relatively flat, compared to the Smokies and Rockies, you still get a sense of big sky and alpine meadows as you follow this ridge that runs between Indianapolis and Cincinnati.
Reuse of the cylinder recording transfer was granted by the University of California, Santa Barbara Library.
