Building an Igloo - Traverse City 2009

A montage of pictures set to music showing our Igloo. There are just a few pictures of the beginning stages of construction but they are very good at showing the process. The igloo was built using the following architectual plan: http://www.architectureweek.com/2007/1212/building_1-1.html
Because we don't have ideal igloo snow-pack here in Traverse City, Michigan each snow block had to be formed in sweat-equity fashion. I wanted my 5 & 8 year old to be able to play in and ON the igloo so for durability and strength I took great care in really compacting each snow block. It took 10 to 20 minutes of very physical pounding, pressing, & packing, and snow-mixing to create each block. In the night photos you can see the different types of snow used. In the beginning I scooped snow from everywhere (neighbor's yards, etc) because the snowfall was intermittent. You can see, again in the night pics, that the top of the igloo was made from blocks of freshly fallen, pure white snow. Anyhow it is essentially an ice-block igloo and the kids love it. - Mike ~ January 2009

What a fantastic project to do with your children, id love to be able to do that but living in Australia its just not possible,have been looking at Traverse City Clips as my son and i will be travelling there in late March and hoping we will see some snow . Again Fantastic the pictures and music are brilliant..
