@eirepol73 my comment was tongue in cheek. If you type in google, the day the strongmen cried by andy hampsten, he gives an account of the Gavia that day. It is the best article i"ve read on cycling. I can only imagine the suffering, pretty brutal!

@dan32113 In 2005 I competed in a Dutch road race and after got chatting to a Dutch guy who was involved with PANASONIC. He was there during Breukink's Gavia win. He admired Hampsten but said that every single nationality (not just Italian "Poofters") got a monumental kicking. Many quit, or shortly afterwards. Others were still wrecked FROM THAT STAGE alone and didn't make TdF selection. He said that nationalities and the 'rule book of hard men' went out the window on that savage day.

Italian Poofters, Andy Hampsten the man...

Ese deporte no esta pagado. El que gana un giro o un tour siempre figura en los anales de la historia. Pero el que llega ultimo tiene que sufrir lo mismo o mas, y nadie se acuerda de el.

Andy was real...this was before EPO....you saw more honest portrait of the sport...

Didn;t they have leg warmers then?

Only time I did the Gavia, was in cold, wet, foggy conditions, snowing at the top. Decent into Bormio, I couldn't feel my hands. Don't give a shi....what people think, as far as I'm concerned the Gavia is the pinnacle of cycling. Its a beast, nothing compares. These conditions are just nuts. In fact, I'm wondering if I was nuts that day. The fear of decending in wet conditions with cliffs into the unknown is frightening, but in the snow, well I let you all figure that out:)

everyone makes such a huge deal about snow in sports like football, the games go down in history but half the time they just sit on the bench with parkas on..well maybe they should see this. although to be fair those balls do get slippery and it's so hard to catch the it because your fingers get cold. boo hoo.
