This is really late, but in the anime yes Ashura is a girl, but the film in my opinion is very inaccurate, it was horrible. The manga is much better, but in the manga, Ashura is genderless, but addressed as a male.

@bigfatcow87 Because the little Ashura was Ashura-Ous "sin" (he could have avoid the small Ashura to be born because he would be the "real" Ashura one day who would destroy the whole world), so at the end of the manga they say "The only child from a king who wished nothing more than the survival of his clan was born genderless. Because who commits a sin will be punished." But I think you already know everything of that, since you posted your comment one year ago haha.Could have seen earlier ;)
