The Potala is located in Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, in People's Republic of China. The Potala Palace was the chief residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to Dharamsala, India after a failed uprising in 1959. Today the Potala Palace has been forcibly converted into a museum by the Chinese. It was named after Mount Potala, the abode of Chenresig or Avalokitesvara.
Thirteen stories of buildings containing over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues, soar 117 metres (384 ft) on top of Marpo Ri, the "Red Hill", rising more than 300 m (about 1,000 ft) in total above the valley floor
The building measures 400 metres east-west and 350 metres north-south, with sloping stone walls averaging 3 m. thick, and 5 m. (more than 16 ft) thick at the base, and with copper poured into the foundations to help proof it against earthquakes. • excellent post ;D

  • Thank you, my friend. Take care.

  • Thanks to you, I saw Potala Palace. The world may never see it again if Chinese have their way. Another world treasure may be lost

  • I personally do not think any thing will happen to Potala Palace under any circumstances. Thanks for the comment.

  • Potala was not build for a Chinese Princess. It was build before the Chinese Princess came to Tibet. There was a Nepalese Princess and three Tibetan wives before the Chinese. She wasn't the main queen anyway. One of the Tibetan wife was. People who are watching this shouldn't rely on this documentary for accurate information, because it was made by Chinese Government Propaganda Department.

  • You may be correct. This was made by Chinese Gvt film unit, I believe. More information can be found at Wikipedia as I have mentioned in "description" section. Thanks for the comment.

  • interesting how people say "Free Tibet" instead of "Restore Theocracy to Tibet".

I guess the interests of a aristocratic religious ruling class and serfdom doesn't do good to lure in Steven Seagal and Richard Gere's money.

  • More Chinese revisionist history and propaganda. Chinese Princess was only one of five wives. This is TIBET not CHINA. As treaty in 821 says:

TIBETANS shall be happy in TIBET and CHINESE shall be happy in CHINA shall NEVER be changed.

  • The Potala has already been heavily looted, gold and silver statues melted down and sold on international market. Tacky gift shop inside Potala and stupid amusement park nearby. This is sacred city of Lhasa (abode of the gods)

  • I agree

  • im doing an s.s fair and im doing the potala palace and it was build by the 18th dali lama

  • free Tibet
