Equal Justice Works prides itself in having the flexibility to be the first responder to some of the country's most devastating natural and social disasters. After Hurricane Katrina, Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellows were deployed to the gulf coast to provide free legal representation to victims of the hurricane. In 2009, when the mortgage foreclosure crisis hit, Equal Justice Works placed 30 AmeriCorps Legal Fellows across the country to provide legal assistance to those facing financial challenges due to the recession. Today, the crisis of homeless veterans is growing, with veterans making up more than 26% of the current homeless population and an estimated 500,000 additional veterans at risk of becoming homeless. Equal Justice Works is stepping in to help.
