Another example of the way that the Sussex Police and SPA responded to the tragic death of James Ashley can be seen by the way that untold thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money was shameless squandered by fighting the dead man's family all the way to the House of Lords in a futile attempt to avoid being sued for "assault". The plods wanted it toned down to "attempted assault". Over six months after they lost, the plods finally apologised and settled out of court.
