Makes the prices seem less expensive. Just one more simple trick businesses use to make a few extra pennies. ;)

The U.K. includes sales tax on price tags? That alone is reason enough to move there!

I'm more concerned about the fact our American friends doesn't have their sale taxes added to their price tags in stores than them keeping the penny.

still it's a bummer you can't pay in exact money because you won't know exactly how much a bunch of items are going to cost. i guess i just hate having loose change though

A pound (£) used to be worth a pound (lb) of silver. it doesn't matter now because we use kg for almost everything but the weight of people (stone), burgers (lb) and cooked steak (oz).

Frankly it makes no sense to have pennies, nickels or quarters in circulation. A better system would be one with dimes and halves only for coins. In other words, the hundredth of a dollar unit of money ought to not exist since it isn't worth the time anymore due to inflation and cost. As for buying postage, you'll just have to buy 10 one cent, 5 two cent, 10 three cent, 5 four cent, 2 five cent, 5 six cent, 10 seven cent, 5 eight cent, 10 nine cent stamps to get your money's worth.

Well, not exactly. It's just not universal practice to include it on the tag price. So if you see something on the shelf that costs $19.95 it'll really run you $21.70 but you won't know that until you ring up unless you wanna run every purchase through a calculator first.

we also sometimes say pounds when referring to weight but normal people have the initiative to work out whether the person is talking about weight or money. most things are measured in kilograms now anyway.
