Aria: Dormono Entrambi
Opera: Norma
Composer: Vincenzo Bellini
Performer (principal): Maria Callas
Performance: 1952 Covent Garden
Misc: This is a fiendishly difficult aria because of the need for tremendous breath control. Norma is brooding over her two children, wondering if she should kill them for being Pollione's. In the end, as she raises her knife, she realizes she can't do it. The leap from plangent bel canto lyricism to drama is one that very few sopranos have managed satisfactorily.

  • Perhaps on of the peak performing moments in Callas' career. Dramatically insane scene, outstandingly rendered. Both lyric AND Theatre. Apistefto.

  • @panos990

eidika apo to 2:26 to kommati einai syn-kinhtiko!...

  • if anyone has this complete performance in its audio format please please make myyear and send me a copy. love it too much!!

  • That GASP before "A NO! Son miei figli!" With that VOCAL sob on "figli".... DEA! Gutwrenching! Heartbreaking!

  • I think the reason it's not advertised much is because EMI does not have the rights to it. I have thousands of opera recordings, and this one is by far my favorite. You're right about the build-up of momentum.

  • dougbalt, here is one more Callas fan who swears by it. Naturally, I like ALL the recordings, but this Simionato del Monaco in my opinion is the most exciting of them all. To appreciate the full measure of this recording one must listen to it in its entirety, how it accumulates momentum as one by one ever single person into the web of Norma's spell.

  • You're right about that 1955 live Norma opposite Simionato and del Monaco. It's not advertised much, but among Callas fans we all swear by it. Never has there been so much adrenaline in a single performance caught on tape.

  • GRANDE!

I like all her Normarecordings...have one from a good friend who sung with her many times... he said that she have been able to change the voice, to turn it where she wanted! LA DIVINA
