The Becky Thatcher Showboat in the background (partially submerged and scheduled for dismantling) on Neville Island, Pennsylvania, on March 2, 2010, with Lee Paxton (me) performing the old folk song "Faretheewell" (aka "Dink's song") as a bit of a dirge for the boat's impending demise.
The boat has some significance to me personally, having grown up primarily in Marietta, Ohio, I saw the Becky many, many times, went to the restaurant, and saw a melodrama or two over the years. The inside cover art for my 2004 album "All Stripped Down" included a photograph I took of the boat. I was glad when she arrived in the Pittsburgh area in October 2009, because I was looking forward to seeing her again close to where I currently live. Then, after heavy snowfall in February 2010, I was saddened to see her sinking and hear of her impending dismantling and demise. So, I thought I'd go see her and play her a farewell song. Faretheewell, Becky, faretheewell.
VERY TOUCHING TRIBUTE. AND SO SAD. I HOPE YOU FAIR WELL, MY FRIEND.
