This is a blue grouse on the May Lake trail in Tuolumne Meadows, you can hear it's mating call at the very beginning. From www.hikingnstuff.com

  • You wouldn't find a ruff in Yosemite and it didn't look like a ruff, it looked like a grouse..

  • That's a blue. Blues "hoot" through air sacs on their neck. Ruffed grouse "drum" by pushing air through their wings quickly. Hooting sounds slower and bassier. Drumming is choppier. Plus, there's probably not any ruffs in this part of the Sierra Nevada.
