This is the first time
I stand in awe of all
That has come and gone
My oil calmed ocean flow
From your forked river tongue
This is the first time
I bathe in all
That is wax and wane
So wrapped in the evening
And your dress of cotton and rain
Pardon my pause now
And pardon my fall
This is the first time
Distant eyes as lights
On a shower-stained street
The smoke from your cigarette
Circles just out of my reach
This is the first time
Flutter I fast
From my Knowledge Tree nest
Baby bird your wings furled
So close to your breast
But I pardoned your pause
And pardoned my fall
You sang in tones of broken glass
And I climbed back into you
You sang a song to trembling lips
And this wild-eyed creature knew
Something human
Something real
Too slow spin the flakes now
Where dancing cinders once glowed
The wind since has worn weary
Ashes cold as the snow
Pardon my pause
No pardon for the fall
Something human
Something real
