Memphis has had many famous musical giants and these are some of the local musicians those giants looked up to the most.
Saxophonist Fred Ford's resume included recordings with Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee Lewis, Rufus Thomas, Gatemouth Moore and many others (he was the voice of the barking & howling dog on Big Mama Thornton's original recording of "Hound Dog".) Ford also spent many years on the road and performed with blues & R & B stars like B.B. King, Johnny Otis and Junior Parker and with jazz greats like Johnny Hodges and Benny Carter.
But in his hometown of Memphis, Ford is best remembered for his long association with singer and master of the Hammond B3 organ Honeymoon Garner in their trio with drummer Bill Tyus.
This performance video was made by Phil Sisk, a retiree who volunteered to document programs at the Overton Park Shell in the late 1980s.
The historic Memphis amphitheater was fully renovated in 2008 thanks to a generous grant from the Mortimer Levitt Foundation and the renamed Levitt Shell now sponsors 50 free concerts every year devoted to developing community through the performing arts.
