Just a few days ago Abdan's Oil Refinery Complex had a production output of around 9 million liters. But now, thanks to its Third Phase that's come on stream, Iran's first modern refinery complex can produce a whopping 15 million barrels of gasoline in a single day. But there's more to this new-found success than meets the eye, says managing director, Abdolreza Mehrban.
At least 50 Iranian companies were involved in the completion of this particular phase. The main goal is to phase out old production units, pave the way for modernization of Iran's oil industry, reach self-sufficiency in gasoline production, and export part of the excess output.
Abadan is the largest gasoline producing plant in Iran, which also happens to be the oldest oil refinery in the Middle East. It had a capacity of around 600,000 barrels in 1980. With the help of the Third Phase, the country can now cut 30 percent of its total gasoline imports, which is around 20 million liters a day.
The final stage of the Third Phase, which is production of jet fuel, is going ahead with full speed, and will be completed in few months.
Because of unilateral sanctions against Iran, several American and European firms have faced bankruptcy. The latest victim is Britain's main shipping company, the Johnson Stevens Shipping Company. The company says it was forced by the British government to cut ties, and has been unable to replace Iran with another major trade partner.
