my advice giv the key to cricket and put a bit off treat in the bowl so he will know where the good stuff is

With clicker training, we try to avoid "luring" the animal with the treat. It's not a bribe, it's showing them that performing positive actions gives them something positive in return. The treat can be anything from a pat or a cuddle, to a nice treat, to lots of exciting praise. And you don't want him ignoring the key and running straight to the bowl for a treat that he didn't work for, which is inevitably what would happen if yummy food was already waiting in the bowl! LOL

A taught my goffin with the sound of the key hitting the glass and never gave a treat unless the trick was completed perfectly. It only took a few times for Shmoo to get it right. If the key dropped out, I made Shmoo pick it back up by pointing to it and Shmoo would then place it into the cup properly,thus getting praise and a treat. Now Shmoo is playing basketball. Search "Shmoo rolling over on command" here on youtube. Later I'll be showing step by step how to get any parrot to do the same.

Great, the training videos are such a help for everyone. Kakarikis have very short attention spans, and too excitable to train anything quickly so it was all baby-steps with him, but once he worked it out he was fine. He knows this one by heart now, and runs at the bowl to get the key in as quickly as possible.
We've been having a break from the training for a while now but I still love to watch others train to get ideas for what we might do when I have time to teach him his next trick!
