@LiberalIntervention He became a KG because Cersei was going to be in KL as well and she wanted him around (she was the one who convinced him to take the post when Aerys offered it, because you can't be forced into the KG). He stayed on to be with her.

@ShadowSonic2 Jaime was put int he KG by Aerys the Mad in order to piss off Tywin Lannister (which backfired on King Aerys spectacularly). I would have thought that Jaime would rather have been let go after he offed Aerys, but Robert kept him around because of his abilities.
