Contemporary Ethnographies project on "Do Glaciers Listen?" by Julie Cruikshank. This short video attempts three things:

To muddle the idea of a pristine wilderness free of human touch by prioritizing Tlingit imagery over static glacial footage collected from tourists contributing to YouTube;

To emphasize the place of bears in Tlingit glacial culture, particularly their involvement in the reductionist rationalization of the grease taboo;

And to assert the importance of glaciers beyond Tlingit culture and the cumulative effect their melting and disappearance will have on the world. The Tlingit song that plays here is "in memory" of the singers' mother: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFTOpPenfYs
