I've read many times that the personality of the calligrapher is reflected in the style of his characters. So, do you think a beginner should try to choose to learn a style (e.g. Yan or Liu) that matches his personality, or is it not important for the first few years of practice?
There are no definite answers as to how a beginner or a teacher should choose a style for the beginner. It depends on many factors.
The videos from 001Asoer 學習書法如何入門 How to start studying Chinese calligraphy (1/3) help to explain this topic.
Many teachers agree that they cannot choose a style for a beginner if that style contradicts the beginner's personality, taste, or preference too much.

While there are still many teachers believe that their choices for their new students are insightful and insist that the students should obey..
