better videos are on the way.
I-43 & I-94 South Bound on ramp from Wisconsin Ave & 11th St on 07 August 2008 which was the opening day for the Marquette interchange reconstruction in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This ramp was created due to a citizen suggestion, by ME!, at a public hearing. What the blushing Engineers did not know was that I had developed a total redesign years ago just for the fun of it. I was bored. I was narrating softly to not disturb my sleeping neighbor. The closing 'Intermission' reference is because there is another ramp that has an issue, and will have a video posted soon.

Up is north. The original on ramp can be seen at the very top at the center of the I-43 shield. Wisconsin Avenue is the bridge just below the shield. The redesign plan was to move the ramp about 1.5 city blocks north yet still have traffic split all three ways. I proposed "Simplification through increased Complexity" which basically meant replacing the one ramp with three separate ramps. This simplifies driver decisions by eliminating choice, and complicates the design for the Engineers. The tricky part is the middle of the three which is the on ramp in this video to I-43 SouthBound. This solution that I had proposed solves the restrictions of space by utilizing a hole along a 3-D path that connects the center of the entire interchange to the surface streets in the only place practicable. Score one for the nerds!

  • Awesome, how were they planning on doing it before you put your suggestion in?

  • I added to the description. LINK 2) The Original Interchange, gives the best overview of what was going to happen.

  • awesome design! You should move to the Twin Cities to help us fix our roads too!

  • A few hundred million dollars worth of flyover ramps would solve most of the crossover and resultant congestion problems.

At least the downtown speghetti bowls have been improved. The whole area is a pretty big mess though.
