In my continuing collection of different banjos playing the same thing, here's another version of Shady Grove.

  • Mr Zepp,What is the advantage of a bacon ring? I figured more bass response but if anything it seems brighter than most?

  • @okiejon This is not my favorite tone ring--I find that the unsupported thin "lip" generates high overtones that can lead to a "tinny" sound. The overtones can be muffled out through setup, but then I don't think the ring sounds that much different from a rolled brass ring.

  • What tuning are you playing in?

  • aDGCD capoed to aEADE, so called "Mountain Minor" or "Sawmill" tuning.

  • It sounds really great. I am hoping to be able to figure out how to play it. Is there tab for that version hanging around anywhere online? Thanks

  • Well, as I rarely (if ever) play it the same way, I don't really have a tab of this recording. As you may know, I have more than 30 recordings of this same tune on my website to compare banjos, and I do have downloadable tab of a transcription of one of those recordings. FTM, I also have a teaching version that I'm happy to share. Please contact me via email, and I'll send you the URL and the teaching tab.

  • I can watch your shady grove videos all day long. Just love how you play that tune!

  • beautiful, I love the up the neck break. This is the song that took my banjo playing to the next level. I see that it ust keeps going up from here. Amazing what that one melody line can inspire!!!

  • Awsome work man! I'm realy diggin your thumb technique on the 5th string. That's pretty cool. Gotta love the saw mill tuneing. I've been tossing around the idea of throwing in a slide on some tunes, especially shady grove. Make it more of a blue grass sound. But, awsome stuff man. Keep it coming!

  • Wow. Very much an apples & orange thing (unless you're French, in which case it's "apples and pears"). The sound, feel, and appearances of these two banjos are about as far apart as you can get.

Thus, I'd recommend one of each. :-)
