from the concert in Ostrava Town Hall 2011
Oskar Nedbal (26 March 1874 -- 24 December 1930) was a Czech violist, conductor and composer.
He was principal conductor with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra from 1896 to 1906 and was a founder member of the Bohemian String Quartet, where he played together with another great Czech composer, Josef Suk.
Nedbal has beside many other works - written also a few pieces for cello and piano. We decided to pay a tribute to him in our Czech cello program and included his Romantic Piece, Op. 18 from 1910 . In the middle of the piece one can hear a theme of a Czech national song " Sil jsem proso".
Nedbal has faced many tragedies in his life, in it is said that he committed suicide by jumping out of a window of the Zagreb Opera House on 24 December 1930.
