thing is, because you made the shadow on top of an other layer, you will erase the things inside the layer also

always put your shadows in a seperate layer

Well this was pretty long and the result isnt that good. Just why do you actually teach people who dont know how to do this in this - such a hard way, Unwrap is used for like difficult shapes like human face or weapons, but not such easy primitives like house (box). It would be much easier if you would simply find a texture select polygons, add the texture, or simply use the UVW mapping.... But good tutorial though, but as I said, really the hard way for this primitive...

why teach someone a minimalistic concept for simpler things? If you learn techniques for complex methods, you can apply them to more indepth studies. If you teach someone the bare minimum, theyre stuck there knowing very little.

UVW gives you a lot more control as opposed to using prcedurals, as procedural materials can comprise of many levels of sub materials just to get the kind of control you can get with a UVW map.
