Really? The austrians lost 6,000 men in the battle, the french only 4 800. And the second french attack was a success. It broke the austrians and sent them into retreat.
I think I'm a better strategist and tactician than Napoleon. I would've had the front tier of soldiers pushing a ten foot wide, five foot high, heavy metal shield that could be rolled forward. Napoleon's troops wouldn't have taken so many hits as they did. The giant rolling shield would have eyeholes in them so the troops could fire as they rolled forward.
Uhh, his army was flat broke at the time, and his soldier hadn't been payed in a very long time. Considering what he had to work with, he did a fair job.
Well he and what we can call his "army" were more motived by the new french republic and to restore french borders. Napoloen had a a way to speak to his soldiers to motivate him.
