I think you're right about the birds carrying the seaweed and other stuff up because down here in the gulf we always see that stuff being dragged up on the beach by seagulls so they can pick the crabs out of it LOL. I have photos of little crabs living in that stuff with the orange bulby looking things growing out of it.

Ohh we had lots of fun walking around! There was nobody over on the marina side at all! But still such a filthy place!
