I used a home built mo-co rig as I could not afford a proper setup. The learning is trial and error, there are plenty of helpful websites out there now :)

What camera?
Its just a tool, any camera with manual settings and a means for a remote trigger or a built in intervalometer will do.
shutter speed length?
Every shot is different, there is no set shutter speed.
Shot duration?
Again all are differnt, between 2-6 hours
every 3-5 mins?
10-45 seconds, depends on the speed of your subject.
