An electric charge builds up in all the ash and dust being blasted into the air by the volcano. I've heard that volcanoes often do trigger small thunderstorms right after an eruption.

I come here in the interest of science and some fuckin religious dumbfuck has already posted a comment trying to convince people that their religion is the RIGHT religion. I have no fucking faith in humanity. I really would like to have some, but I am waiting for the moment I am prooved wrong.
