A NASA-sponsored researcher at the University of Iowa has developed a way for spacecraft to hunt down hidden magnetic portals in the vicinity of Earth. These portals link the magnetic field of our planet to that of the sun.

if you guys can stop arguing over petty nonsense for one minute you might be able to grasp how amazing this discovery is and what it implies.

Put some sort of solar harnessing device in some of the portals to generate power. Then convert that power into a microwave beam. Set the super space microwave beam generator in a certain orbit so that it always points @ Mars. Then record how long it takes to reheat it's core. (Insert mad scientist laugh here)

So how close are we to portal guns?

Is that what might create the stationary points of energy that can be noted on the orbital plane of the planets as they swing near or around the back of the sun from us?

Our own planet must have such points of focused energy, but how do we find it?

The video is good and the information and discovery important, but is missleading.

This have nothing to do with traveling. I understand that Nasa is doing all sort of publicity stunts to survive but this is no good. I remember when they say that a mission to Mars (maybe the MSL?) will be a failure if they don't find water. That is exactly the opposite of what science actually is: A way to model reality, not to prove whatever I want reality to be.

A picture like this always leaves me in awe of the forces around us that we can't always observe with our 5 senses. The hidden, mysterious aspects of reality are what drive all forms of science, so how could one claim to know all of the answers in the face of so much mystery? The unknown is the most humbling thing in the universe, and both atheists and theists would do well to remember how little we know. Science as we know it will always be a human frontier of discovery.

I can agree with that... hopeing ISON will be big enough to see more than just the cloud or the actual bright combustion point of the surface releasing gases in reaction to UV rays... though ISON may not be in the proper position in the sky for us to see in the U.S., though I am hopeful... considering how bright it shines at the distance it was first seen, I hope is an indication of it's visibility... though not TOO big I hope... don't need it dragging asteroids from the belt with it, lol

Yeah, if public relations could stop comparing sci-fi portals to magnetic reconnection, that'd be great. Apart from that, amazing video, thanks NASA!
