Officials say a 22-year-old firefighter/paramedic was shot to death as he got off the fire truck early Monday morning. And two Maplewood police officers were wounded. One officer was shot in the right shoulder and his injury wasn't considered life-threatening The other injured officer was taken to another hospital but details aren't being released about his condition. It's believed that gunman was holed up in a home across the street from the burning vehicle. By noon that home had burned to the ground, but the status of the suspect wasn't known. Dozens of police officers surrounded the brick home for hours with rifles pointed as smoke poured from the home. In the meantime, officers went door to door in the neighborhood telling people to evacuate immediately. There's no immediate word what on what caused the standoff. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

I hate that people can be as bad as to say something rude and disrespectful about the dead my cousin Ryan was the kind of person who would have done anything for anybody and he gets disrespected after dying in the line of duty he was a paramedic he was a firefighter never did it cross our mind that he would get shot on the job but he did at his first fire and people say bad things what has the world come to. i would also like to thank everyone for the thoughts and prayers for our family.

Please pray for the family of the firefighter who was killed. Please pray for firefighting personel around the country for their job is both difficult and dangerous. Another testimony to the sinfulness of man.

@downloadgoblin its common, Dade county, Florida ems workers(includes fire rescue) have to ware bullet proof vest...and your likely to be shot at within the first 5 years of you working there...

@TjHUMMERT I am sorry for your loss. Don't let the insensitive people on here get to you. Let's see them get out there and be a public servant and fight fires, deal with accidents and dodge bullets. I praise ALL Firefighters, Paramedics, and Law Enforcement. They are out there risking their lives daily doing what the insensitive folks on here are too scared to do. All these folks do is get on here and make fun of an innocent death or tragedy. Their judgement day will come one day.

@bigguy760 The death of ANY emergency personel is a sad story BUT you are wrong to quote "Cops Take Them (lives)". Police Officers only take a life when a person breaks the law and requires law enforcement to respond that way. If that person refuses to comply with the orders of a Police Officer and excecutes a threat towards the officers or the public citizens, the Officers have to respond to such threat, and unfortunately, sometimes that means deadly force has to be used. Thats the facts

Wow, what is wrong with people these days? I don't see why someone would kill an innocent person, let alone a firefighter, a brave man who helps save peoples' lives.

I hope the guy who shot Ryan Hummert got what he deserved - either getting roasted alive or sent to prison rotting in a jail cell for the rest of his life.

Being a Paramedic in a shit hole of a city, getting shot is in the back of my mind often. It really is a 'Jungle Out There'!
