  • Now he's one handsome fella! Does he tend to try out dominance like a lot of male ACDs? Is he at stud or did you have him fixed?

  • @schlusselmensch Not at all. He is very good with other dogs and even cats. Smaller critters tend to trigger his high prey or chase instincts. Neutered at 6 months.

  • @djsrework My male Cattle Dog could pass for his brother. So, when he's on the lead or loose, he walks with his body behind you? On loose hikes, our female will only go ahead if told and constantly checks back to see if it's still OK. Our intact male will invariably take point and needs to be reminded. Two or three tries per walk and then he'll give up. No promotion today! That's what I meant about "try out dominance".

  • @schlusselmensch Thats interesting...when he has his harness on and we are walking on pavement he stays by my side. The moment I take the harness off and he hits the grass he becomes a different dog. Recall becomes difficult so I only let him roam free in a few locations.

  • @djsrework I've got huge fields for hikes but the best investment I ever made for my dogs was Tri-Tronics control collars for the pair of them. It allows me to walk them with a literally invisible leash. There is no situation (other dogs, hunting, prey chase) I could not recall them from and it would virtually always take only the tone warning of the collar. No, I'm not a Tri-Tronics agent.

  • @schlusselmensch I sometimes share custody of my dogs with my parents from time to time and they purchased a Tri-Tronics system but have yet to use. I will encourage them to give it a try. Thanks!

  • The first dog I have ever owned and trained is a CD named Timber from Banburry Farms (I live in Texas). Like your dog Timber is also fixed. I have found that, when leash walking, Timber is most responsive when he has his harness, and equally responsive off leash on hikes. On hikes, he will stay ahead of me and my wife, but just so long as he can see us. It's funny how he is so independent, yet when on hikes if he looses site of us, you could hear him for miles as he breaks brush to find us.

  • Now he's one handsome fella! Does he tend to try out dominance like a lot of male male Heelers do? Is he intact or neutered?

  • @regidaws Not sure...I wouldn't think so but anything is possible!

  • Our AD/CD can move her ears separately. Is this a distinctive trait for the breed?
