Mikel Graham graduated in 2004 with top honors from Horizon Science Academy Cleveland High School, becoming the first community school graduate in Ohio to receive a full scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In June, he will be awarded a dual bachelor's degree in aeronautics and astronautics and in philosophy. After a summer stint teaching physics to freshman MIT students physics, Mikel will attend Georgia Tech, where he will pursue a master's degree in propulsion sciences.
In May, Mikel told the Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions about his experiences growing up and studying at military schools in the United States, Japan and Guam, before moving to east Cleveland, where he found the public school environment unsatisfying, until the day his mother accidentally stumbled across a brochure promoting Horizon Science Academy.
Horizon Science Academy has set up an account to raise funds to defray Mikel's graduate expenses. Contact them at mikelgradfund@hsas.org.
