This is the 11th song of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater taken from the Latin text of Jacopone da Todi ca. 1300.
The whole Stabat Mater was composed within the Baroque era but the exact date can only be speculated at about or before 1736. As a whole it continues to describe the Virgin Mary and the feelings she would go through as she watched her Son die on the cross and our feelings of wanting to be with her and feel what she felt.
Translation of song 11:
In my ardor and zeal let me be defended by You, Virgin, on Judgment Day. Make me be guarded by the Cross, fortified by the death of Christ and fostered by Grace.
When this video was shot both Emili (sop) and Elina (alto) were in the middle of their Bachelor's of Music studies in a University of Applied Sciences in Finland.
The Baroque project was worked on closely with Baroque teacher Christine Burklin. The two soloists also lead 8 of their classmates to become the string ensemble accompaniment.

  • Emili, I love your singing, i have a friend, she is 17 years old, soprano, very talented could you teach her? if not could you recommend a teacher, we love baroque style singing, thank you so much!!

  • I love baroque and would love to let someone know what i have learned but I am living in Finland right now studying. If i ever move to a town closer I would of course get in touch =) The best thing is for her to apply to a university or college immediately in the historic music or old music category to find a teacher whom follows traditional styles earlier times. Good luck and thank you so much for liking my singing!
